Why are we so attached to our clothes?

There tends to be a lot of memory and meaning tied to our wardrobe. I know I’ve held onto a pair of jeans for a little too long because I thought I might be able to squeeze into them again someday. I have a lot of great memories in those jeans, and I felt good about myself when I was wearing them. But, the reality is, they don’t fit anymore.

Furthermore, if I could fit in them again, I would want to buy new jeans.

it’s exciting to update your wardrobe when you feel in better shape.

It’s punishment to keep those too-small jeans. Every time I open my closet, I see them, and I’m reminded I can’t fit into them.

**While it’s possible that keeping those jeans could motivate you, that is not the case for me. I choose to get rid of the clothes that do not fit.

My philosophy when it comes to clothes:

  • Embrace where you are.

Only keep clothes that fit you right now, are your current size, and that make you feel good about yourself. Keeping those "too small" clothes is a constant reminder that you are longing for something else. Your desire to lose weight isn’t likely to go away simply because you hold onto your old jeans. And when you do lose weight, you're going to want new clothes anyway, not those size 4 jeans you wore in high school that are now out of style.

  • Size doesn't matter.

The number on the tag, is just that, a number. Sometimes I feel disappointed that I'm a size 10. Before I got married, I was a size 6-8. But that's ok. It's how you feel that matters. If you don't feel good about yourself, eat less crap, and move a little more. But don't be mean to your body. It's just an innocent bystander, and doing the best it can with the circumstances its in.

  • We are all a work in progress. I am letting go of the need for perfection and the all-or-nothing attitude, and being more at peace and grateful for what my body does for me every day. Lightening up on the expectations I have for myself boosts my confidence and makes me feel good.

It’s immensely freeing to clean out my clothes closet and get rid of the things I no longer wear. When I do this, it also makes it so much easier to get dressed, because I’ve decreased the options I have to choose from. I either have one pair of jeans, or a dress with leggings or tights, and that’s it. As long as the clothes I’m choosing to keep make me feel good about myself, having less options and lightening up my clothes makes my life so much easier.

I’m usually all about less, but in this case, I know you need to read More…
